BRINGING BABY HOME

It was the most surreal feeling, bringing a baby home. Kyle and I and our doula Lacey left for the hospital on July 16th and we came back home with a little tiny human being. He was real. I could finally see his little face, toes and fingers.

OUR HEARTS JUST EXPLODED INTO LITTLE PIECES.

Oliver Kingsley

7/17/17

6lbs, 6oz

2:45pm

I wrote a full blog about my labor story if you want to know more.

I remember unswaddling him for the first time ever with Kyle. Oliver just put his little arms up instantly and our hearts just exploded into little pieces. That vision and memory will stay engraved in my mind and heart forever. I dressed him for the first time in his little white onesie that I had debated for a while during my nesting hours if it was going to be his FIRST outfit ever.

You wait for such a long time, imagine and picture a little nugget that will be part of your life forever that when that moment comes, itโ€™s completely magical and completely out of this world.

Your body is a temple. Your body is absolutely fascinating. I’m in awe of what I’ve been capable of doing that I never thought I’d have the strength or courage to do.

PRETTY INSANE FIRSTS

We set him in the car seat and we were on our way. I was so nervous in the car and yet so excited. I kept picturing him in our apartment, in his nursery, like โ€œwhat is this going to look like?โ€ That feeling that he is going to enter that place where he will grow up for a certain amount of time for the first time. I am aware that I keep saying for the “first time” but it’s a bunch of pretty insane FIRSTS to go through. ย They are all coming to fruition at that particular moment. Taking that in was so important for me.

He was going to live with us!

Wait what? How? Omg! This is happening.

ย  ย Fun fact: this was the last picture I took before going into labor!

WELCOME HOME, LITTLE BOY!

We walked into the apartment and I just looked at Kyle with a heavy chest with so many emotions, all of a sudden I notice this huge โ€œwelcome baby boyโ€ decoration on the floor with baby toys and balloons all over the apartment and I just lost it, burst in tears and will never, ever forget that precious moment, that fire in my heart. Iโ€™m crying right now just writing about it. It was the most special, intense, life-changing moment full of happiness ever. There he was just sleeping peacefully.

FINALLY WE WERE AT PEACE

Our first night was a little rough as I was very sleep-deprived and Oliver had a hard time sleeping anywhere else but on our chest. I was so scared to roll over him or for him to fall from my chest, I couldn’t bear to close an eye. So Kyle, just naturally grabbed him and laid him on his chest and slept. No big deal, as if he had done it all of his life. I was at peace. Finally. <3

We had to learn to swaddle which is a funny, anxious process when your baby is crying and youโ€™re doing this for the first timeโ€ฆeverything was very challenging but so much fun as well. I recommend the velcro swaddles as they are much easier and quick! I remember when weโ€™d change his diaper and he would pee everywhere all over the wall and Iโ€™d literally just look at it, with epic exhaustion and just say โ€œitโ€™ll dry. I donโ€™t care.โ€ Or when heโ€™d poop after 3 changes in a row! Kyle and I would just explode laughing at the turn our life had just taken.

oliver

The first few months are no doubt quite intense and all babies are different! Oliver is a cuddler so at the beginning he would rarely let us put him down. That was a bit challenging but we just enjoyed the cuddles and I accepted that I was often stuck in crazy positions as he had just fallen asleep on top of me and just the idea of moving an inch was criminal!

It goes by so fast and now I look at his pictures crying because I already miss him this tiny, or just reminisce how special it was. I also realize that I was a constant wreck attempting to learn or just figuring out what the hell I was doing that a lot things just feel like a flash.

Bottom line, youโ€™re doing great mommy! Youโ€™re not alone and itโ€™s hard and itโ€™s ok, it will be the most rewarding time of your life.

We experience love and we experience loss. Without love there wouldnโ€™t be grief and without grief, there wouldnโ€™t be love. On each side of grief resides LOVE.

When it all feels a little overwhelming, remember that whichever mountain you are climbing, there is love on the other side.

Love is the healing of grief, and grief is what makes love devastatingly difficult.

We canโ€™t protect ourselves from love, neither can we protect ourselves from grief. So love like you would for lifetimes to go โค๏ธ

Mocking a woman going through incredible hormonal changes; pregnancy, pms, menopause etcโ€ฆ is not a laughing matter. โ

Yes, routine is very important with babies and kids.โ  โ  BUT... ๐Ÿ‘€โ  โ  Learn and adapt to bring that routine with you, anywhere and anytime! โ  โ  A baby doesnโ€™t force you to stay home and not be able to do anything. โ  โ  They are very adaptable, they feed off your energy and love the adventure too! โ  โ  It is harder to expose an older child to changes than it is when theyโ€™re young; like flying or traveling, like dinnerโ€™s out and about. โ  โ  ๐Ÿ“ฃ A routine is not a mold that canโ€™t expand! ๐Ÿ“ฃโ  โ  Youโ€™re out and about and itโ€™s nap time? Teach your child to nap and soothe at the same time but in a different environment! โ  โ  Example: Try a stroller or carrier. โ  โ  Sometimes just putting over your shoulder a little muslin swaddle (obviously away and not close to their face please) can recreate a calming moment and fall asleep. โ  โ  It can be as surprising for you and for your baby to learn that their needs can be met at all times and still have a life! โ  โ  And sometimes throwing the towel and heading back to your comfy nest (if you can) is fine too! โ  โ  But the big idea that I'm trying to share here is you need to have the confidence that you and your baby can adapt and experience together. ๐Ÿ’“ โ  โ  What do you think?? โ  โ  #losangelesblogger #themommycodes #candidmotherhood #getoutside #buildingroutines
