Mom Coaching with Stephanie Rosenfield
Watch the replay of my Instagram Live with mom coach, Stephanie Rosenfield where we have an open heart conversation about parenting struggles and her approach on how to teach moms to stay calm. We touch on regulation, what to do during triggers, the focus on repairing, why we yell, what expectations our children have of us and vice versa, and mainly that we are not perfect – but tools to be as close as possible to enjoying parenting without a fight!
Main Coaching Takeaways
1. The “Perfect Parent”
There is no such thing as the “perfect parent”, you have to understand that you are learning and allow for some mistakes.
2. Reactions to Child Triggers
It is important to stop and freeze if your child triggers you, and then to control your reaction so that you can communicate with your child more effectively.
3. Conflict In Front of Children
Conflict can happen between partners, and it can happen in front of children, but that’s okay! However, it is also important to resolve the conflict in front of children so that they can see the process and learn skills on how to resolve a conflict.
4. Time-sensitive Activities
Connection, preparation, and permission are important keys to communicating with kids, especially if it is a time-sensitive activity. For example, if you are watching a show and your partner comes in and blocks the tv and says “we have to leave now”, you will be taken aback and probably not want to go. This is the same for kids. It is important to communicate with them and give them some time to prepare when possible. In terms of permission, it can be very helpful to give a child a choice. For example, you can let your child decide if they want to get dressed upstairs or downstairs which will help them feel like they have made a decision and are not being told what to do every minute of the day.
5. Mom Coaching
Being a mother is complicated and it doesn’t always come as easily as people think it will, and that is where mom coaching comes in. Just as in skiing, you don’t look at some Instagram tips and then try and go down a black diamond run the first time you go skiing. Instead, you need a ski instructor to help you learn, and it’s no different with learning to be a mom!
